Home Birth

Home birth occurs when a woman labors and delivers a child at home, rather than the labor and delivery ward of a hospital or birthing center.

  • During labour and birth your contracted midwife cares for you in your home.
  • You may choose to have a second midwife or an obstetrician/GP attend the birth.
  • Your contracted midwife provides postnatal care in your home.
  • Midwives must be accredited by a specific hospital if they are to assist with your birth at that hospital.
  • Natural Alternatives to Birth Management and Intervention

A variety of methods can be used during natural childbirth to aid the mother.

Pain management techniques other than medication include:

  • Hydrotherapy
  • Massage
  • Relaxation therapy
  • Hypnosis
  • Mindfulness Water birth Movement and different positions (i.e. using a birthing ball) )
  • Breathing exercises
  • Hot and cold therapy (i.e. using hot compresses and/or cold packs
  • Methods to augment labor without medication include:

  • Changing positions frequently
