when to start semi solids

The World health Organization recommends to wait until your baby is at least six months of age before starting food other than breast or formula milk. There are few indicators which can help you in deciding when to start semi solids.

  • Your baby has the sufficient head control to allow him to swallow safely.
  • Your baby no longer displays tongue extrusion reflex, which means baby does not push solid out of her month.
  • Your baby is becoming more aware, it shows an increased interest in food that you are eating.

Allergies

It is advised to introduce solid foods to baby's diet gradually to monitor baby's reaction to particular type of food. This becomes more important for babies from family with allergy history. The signs of reaction can be vomitting, diarrohea, hives or swelling around the mouth.

Recommended food guidelines for babies 6-12 months old

Every child has a different appetite and responds differently to adapting solid food. These are just recommendations. Don't try to force your child, give time to get used to new tastes and textures. If you have any worries , you can always see a paediatric dietitian or visit a baby health clinic.
