 What causes Nappy Rash?
Wetness
in the nappy area is the main cause of the emerging
problem of nappy rash seen in the present generation of babies.
Urine and faeces breaks
down into harmful substances such as acetone and ammonia.
Any prolonged contact with these residuals leads to
nappy rash.
Nappy rashes look like
red spots with blister and broken skin. It
becomes very irritating for the baby. Usually, it disappears
with simple treatment ,however, in extreme cases a secondary
infection may take place, which is of course, much more
serious and a health care professional should be consulted.
How to prevent nappy rash- Changing nappies as soon as they become wet or soiled.
- Do not leave the disposable nappies on for more than two hours. Spending little extra is worth than the discomforting your child.
- Change the nappy before putting baby down after a feed, or to sleep.
- Minimise the use of plastic pants that don't allow baby's skin to breathe.
- Make a nappy free time for your baby.
Treatment for nappy rash
- Best treatment is
allowing air to get to the skin.
- wash baby's bottom with cotton soaked in warm water
when changing nappy, pat dry well; avoid chemical
'wipes'.
- use a soothing cream such as old fashioned zinc cream, or a herbal healing cream.
- If the rash is not settling after a few days, seek medical advice.
