Around 40 per cent of fertility problems
originate in the man. Male fertility problems mainly
include poor quality sperm or blockages in the tubes
of the reproductive system.
Blockage of Sperms
In around one in three cases of male infertility, blockages
or absences of tubes (including the vas deferens) are
the cause of infertility. The vas deferens that carries
sperm from the testicles to the penis can be blocked for
a variety of reasons including prior vasectomy, injury
or infection.
Low Sperm count
The reason for low sperm count can be many types of infections. These can be recent infections or from childhood.
Common infections can be mumps or certain types of sexually transmitted.
Sperm Morphology & Motility
Abnormally shaped sperm may have problems penetrating
the surface of the woman’s egg. The sperm need motility
to be able to swim well and survive for a number of
hours in the female reproductive tract. The poor motility can prevent
the sperm from reaching the egg.
Fertilty Treatment options
Hormone therapy- to increase sperm count.
Assisted insemination
Surgical sperm extraction from testes
Sperm microinjection-A single sperm is injected directly into the body (cytoplasm) of the egg, bypassing most of the barriers to fertilisation.
