Ideal Weight prior to pregnancy

A woman's body weight is linked to her chance of a successful conception, a healthy pregnancy and a healthy normal-weight baby. It's a good idea to have a healthy body weight prior to attempting a pregnancy. The key objective is "Being healthy" not dragging yourself to achieve a "body of a super model". Under weight women or who go on crazy diets sometimes start getting problem in ovulation which can jeopardise their plan of pregnancy.

Check your body mass index

The most modern way to check whether you are at healthy weight is to check your body mass index (BMI)

BMI =   weight(kg)
         height(m)Xheight(m)

NOTE: This does not apply if yoy are already pregnant

It is important to lose weight sensibly and slowly during the preconceptual care period. The common practice of going on a crash diet is particularly dangerous within a few weeks or months of conceiving.

What to expect from your preconception check up

Your doctor will:

  • conduct a general physical examination.
  • talk with you about your plans to start trying to conceive and answer any questions you may have about conception, pregnancy and birth
  • review the list of medications you're currently taking and let you know which medications are safe to continue prior or during the pregnancy and which ones should be discontinued.
  • Discuss any chronic medical condition you currently have or previously suffered from, it may affect your ability to conceive.
  • Recommend any necessary changes about your life style(e.g., quitting smoking, reducing intake of alcohol)

Smoking

Kicking off bad habits

  • Kick your Smoking habit
    • Smoking makes you less fertile
    • Smoking interferes with the absorption of vitamin C
    • Smoking disrupts the flow of oxygen to the baby
    • Smoking increases risk of giving birth prematurely
    • Smoking can interfere with breast feeding

  • Restrict Your Coffee Intake
    • Caffeine tends to acts as a diuretic, removing both fluid and calcium from your body.
    • Caffeine interferes with the absorption of iron

  • Douching - thing of the past

  • Douching reduces the chances of conceiving to a significant extent. Studies have shown that even douching with water is not reccomendable. It is the mechanics of douching rather than what you douche with that's responsible for any resulting gynecological problems.

  • Stress and Anxiety

  • Stress and anxiety can delay conception, so it is important taht you incorporate plenty of rest and relaxation into your life when you are trying to conceive. Moderate Physical activity not only contributes to general good health, but it also relieves stress and tension, thus helping to keep your hormones and functioning normally.
